PHP To Unveil Hotel-Style Dining for Patients

PLANO, Texas — Have you ever tried a wild mushroom enchilada or craved pancakes for dinner? No matter what patients are in the mood for, the food service department at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano (PHP) has something on its menu that is sure to please.

In June, the hospital’s food and nutrition services department will unveil a new room service concept called Five Star Dining. Modeled after hotel-style room service, patients will be able to choose when and what they eat. Available from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., each meal is specially prepared to order and delivered by a tuxedoed ambassador within 45 minutes.

Currently, patients at the hospital are offered a Timely Choice menu selection process. A representative from the food and nutrition services department visits with a patient to review the selections for that particular meal. Meals are delivered at a certain time during the day. Mary Spicer, director of Food, Nutrition and Conference Services at PHP, is excited about the room service concept and the new range of choices offered. "Being able to select what they eat and when they eat helps patients enjoy increased control and comfort during their stay," she says. "Even people on special diets can make decisions that best suit their personal tastes."

Most of the menu entrees meet the requirements of the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society, including dishes like grilled salmon with coconut dill cream and tenderloin of beef with a shitake chipotle sauce. A children’s menu is also available.

"Our culinary-trained chef believes food can be well seasoned without using excessive salt and fat to add flavor," Spicer says. "We work hard to satisfy many different appetites."
