THR Thanks Legislators for Preserving Medicaid Funding 07/11/2005
I’m Doug Hawthorne, president and CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
Today, I’d like to say a special “thank you” to several Texas legislators who exercised extraordinary leadership to do the right thing for the most vulnerable Texans and, indeed, for all the people of Texas.
We sincerely appreciate the tremendous energy these policymakers spent to understand the complexities of Medicaid and find a workable alternative for organizing and managing care to protect existing state and federal funding. Their efforts prevented attempts to establish a faulty managed-care version of Medicaid for our state’s urban areas. While most agree that Medicaid needs help, a plan that would have benefited health maintenance organizations at the expense of Texans is bad policy for Texas.
Thank you, Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Speaker of the House Tom Craddick, Sens. Jane Nelson of Flower Mound, Royce West of Dallas, and Judith Zaffirini of Laredo, and Reps. Vicki Truitt of Southlake, Dan Branch of Dallas, Fred Hill of Richardson, Helen Giddings of Dallas and Dianne Delisi of Temple. Your leadership and courage to do the right thing for the right reasons means that health care for some of our most vulnerable residents can be preserved.
It is heartening to know that our elected officials studied the ramifications of the Star+Plus plan and said “no thanks – that’s not good for Texas.”
For Texas Health Resources and its faith-based hospitals – Harris Methodist, Presbyterian and Arlington Memorial – I’m Doug Hawthorne.
