I’m Doug Hawthorne, CEO of Texas Health Resources, with “The Business of Health Care Report.”
North Texas is all too familiar with the tragic headlines that can result when new mothers suffering from postpartum depression go undiagnosed and untreated. Postpartum depression affects up to 20 percent of new mothers within a year after giving birth and can be a severe mental illness involving thoughts of hurting oneself or the newborn baby.
Women are twice as likely to suffer depression than men, and the causes, symptoms and treatment of depression in women are often different, so taking a “one size fits all” approach to treatment can be ineffective.
That’s why Texas Health Harris Methodist Springwood Hospital has launched a unique program tailored to women who suffer from postpartum depression or depression linked to childbearing, infertility, loss of a child, or hormone-related conditions.
The Springwood Program for Women is the first hospital-based intensive outpatient program in Texas that is specifically tailored to treat the unique needs of women in various life stages. The program emphasizes cognitive behavioral group therapy as an important component of treatment.
The Springwood Program for Women has two locations: Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Bedford. For more information, go to www.TexasHealth.org/Springwood.
For our faith-based hospitals – Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Harris Methodist and Texas Health Arlington Memorial – I’m Doug Hawthorne.
