Harris Methodist Erath County Sleep Lab Encourages Participation in Challenge Event

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — As part of the National Sleep Awareness Week®, the Harris Methodist Erath County Hospital (HMEC) Sleep Lab encourages community members to learn about better sleep behaviors by participating in the Great American Sleep Challenge™, an interactive online campaign created by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) that runs through the end of March. The 2008 Sleep Challenge offers sleep-related games, activities and educational materials.

“I believe it’s important for people to learn about creating a proper sleep environment as well as healthy sleep habits and behaviors,” said Karen Fincannon, cardiopulmonary/sleep lab director. “The NSF offers a unique way to help people improve their sleep and alertness.”

Educational materials for the 2008 Sleep Challenge are organized into seven themed days designed to teach visitors about specific sleep disorders and problems. The different focuses include examining the link between sleep problems and mood, the consequences of sleep deprivation, insomnia risk factors, snoring and sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and daytime sleepiness. The Challenge can be found on

The HMEC Sleep Lab provides quality sleep studies in a home-like setting locally, allowing community members to stay close to home to receive these services. It is staffed by respiratory therapists who are licensed by the American Association for Respiratory Care and the Texas Department of Health. Medical services are provided by physicians on the medical staff who are Board Certified in Sleep Medicine.

“Sleep, or lack thereof, impacts so much of our lives, that it is important for people who suffer from sleep problems be diagnosed and treated,” Fincannon said. “We are glad the Sleep Challenge offers a unique way to explore possible causes of sleep deprivation and provide an avenue for individuals to reach out to their physicians for the opportunity to do a sleep study and begin treatments.”

The HMEC Sleep Lab can be reached at 254-964-8742.
