Texas Health Azle earns Stroke Center Designation

AZLE, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle has been designated a Level III Stroke Center by the Texas Department of State Health Services. To achieve the designation, Texas Health Azle underwent a rigorous survey to determine the hospital’s ability to provide efficient resuscitation, assessment and stabilization of a stroke victim. The designation is for two years.

“The Stroke Center designation signifies our commitment to ensuring quality care is available for stroke patients in our community,” said Valarie Gilbert, chief nursing officer at Texas Health Azle. “We are thrilled to offer this care in a setting that is close to home.”

According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately two million brain cells die every minute of a stroke. This increases the risk of permanent brain damage, disability or death, making immediate care critical.

“Rapidly responding to symptoms of a stroke is vital to achieving the best possible outcome for a patient,” said Amie Penrod, R.N., stroke coordinator at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle. “This designation provides our community access to immediate options for stroke care.”

Additionally, as part of the requirements for the designation, Texas Health Azle offers educational lectures and chronic disease self-management classes to help educate the community on the symptoms and warning signs of a stroke and how to act FAST if someone may be suffering from one.
