Texas Health Cleburne to Host Vascular Screening Day
01/15/2010

CLEBURNE, Texas — An estimated 8 million men and women have peripheral artery disease, but only about 25 percent of patients are undergoing treatment for it, according to statistics from the American Heart Association.

To help individuals see if they have heart disease, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne will hold vascular risk screening exams by appointment between 8 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Jan 19. The screening lasts 15 minutes and costs $120.

The screening includes an ultrasound of the neck arteries, ultrasound of abdominal artery, and Doppler measurements of the arteries in the ankle. Call 1-877-THR-WELL (1-877-847-9355) for an appointment.

Diabetes and smoking are strong risk factors for peripheral artery disease, along with controllable risk factors, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, a sedentary lifestyle and obesity, which also increase a person’s risk for coronary heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.

“It is crucial that individuals monitor their risk factors and take steps to lower or eliminate their risks,” said Kevin Sullivan, cardiopulmonary manager at Texas Health Cleburne. “We encourage anyone who is concerned about heart disease to discuss their risk factors and lifestyle with their physician. Screenings can be an important tool to open the lines of communication with the physician.”
