Qualifying Women Can Schedule Free Mammograms at Texas Health Cleburne

CLEBURNE, Texas — It’s October, and there is a sea of pink everywhere reminding women to get their annual mammograms.

Since 1996, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne has provided free mammograms to women who meet certain criteria through the Mammograms are a Must! program. The Mammograms Are a Must! program is sponsored by the Black & White Gala and Friends of Texas Health Cleburne. The initiative is designed to increase early detection of breast cancer in women.

To qualify for a free mammogram, Johnson County women must be over the age of 40, have no health insurance, have no diagnosed breast health problems and pass a financial screening. To date the program has provided more than 2,500 no-cost mammograms and follow-up diagnostic tests for women who qualified for the screening mammogram and who required follow-up diagnostic testing.

The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Radiology recommend women 40 and older have annual mammograms. Women with dense breasts or who are younger than 50 are specifically encouraged to get a digital mammogram, according to

Younger women and women with dense breasts benefit most from digital images because the technology makes it easier to penetrate dense breast tissue. Radiologists also can better create contrasts when reading the images.

In 2009, the hospital upgraded to digital mammography equipment, which was made possible by financial support from the Black & White Gala and the hospital auxiliary. The hospital is also accredited for mammography by the American College of Radiology.

For those women who do not qualify through the program, Texas Health Cleburne offers digital mammogram appointments throughout the week. Saturday appointments for screening mammograms are also available between 8 a.m. and noon on Oct. 23.

“Getting a digital mammogram is an important check for women wanting to maintain good health,” said Lee Lennington, director of radiology at Texas Health Cleburne. “October is a great time to schedule a yearly mammogram because awareness of breast health is so high.”
