Three Nurses From Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital make 'Great 100' List

CLEBURNE, Texas – Texas Health Resources (THR), the healthcare system with which Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital (HMWR) is affiliated, had more nurses named to the Texas Nurses’ Association’s 2008 “Great 100 Nurses” list than any other North Texas health care system. Three nurses, Kelly Curlee, Kelli Elston, and Kathleen Harlow, are from HMWR.

Kelly Curlee, clinical coordinator and OB nurse, is an RN certified in inpatient obstetrics and teaches neonatal resuscitation to fellow nurses to ensure clinical competencies are kept up to date. She also serves as the hospital’s representative to assist in integrating technology and nursing care.

Kelli Elston is TNCC, ENPC, BLS and ACLS certified and works in the emergency department. She was most recently Outstanding ED Nurse of the Year. According to the person who submitted her nomination, Elston’s significant contribution lies in the very art and science of the professional nurse. She receives many notes from patients who quote “Excellent nurse,” “Great care,” “she made me feel special.”

Kathleen Harlow, RNC, BSN, MSN, recently joined HMWR as the manager of Women’s Services. Prior to her role as an OB Manager in the civilian world, she was nurse leader in the Navy, she is currently in the naval reserves. Her leadership has contributed to improved patient satisfaction scores, reduced vacancy rates, and improved clinical standards.

“Our three Great 100 Nurses are great examples of nurses who are dedicated to improving the care our patients receive,” said Blake Kretz, president of HMWR. “These ladies go above and beyond to expand their roles to make sure our hospital provides a safe and comfortable experience for all our patients.”

The list recognizes nurses who are role models and have made a significant difference in nursing, in their hospitals and in the lives of patients.

Twenty-six registered nurses across THR’s 13-hospital system were designated this year as “Great 100 Nurses.” The list of “Great 100 Nurses” is selected each year by the Texas Nurses’ Association.

“I am so proud of each THR nurse honored among the ‘Great 100,’” said THR Chief Executive Officer Douglas D. Hawthorne. “These women and men set an example for all of us because of the hard work they do every single day and their dedication to the medical care and personal needs of each patient they serve. People like these inspire others around them to become nurses, for which we are truly grateful.”

The THR hospitals represented include Arlington Memorial Hospital, Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital, Harris Methodist H•E•B Hospital, Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital, Harris Methodist Walls Regional Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital of Allen, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Presbyterian Hospital of Plano.

The “Great 100 Nurses” will be honored by the Texas Nurses Association, Districts 3 and 4, and the Dallas-Fort Worth Nurse Executives at the 18th annual gala on Monday, May 12 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.
