Young Girls Donate Hand-Made Gift Bags to Parents in Texas Health Dallas NICU
03/29/2012

DALLAS — Young girls from a North Texas church recently donated hand-made gift bags for parents of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. The bags serve as overnight kits. More than 120 girls, ages 8 to 11, from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Allen participated in the community service project.

The girls hand-sewed the bags and filled them with essential, every-day hygiene goodies like tooth brushes, tooth paste, deodorant, wash cloths, combs and shampoo. A hand-made gift tag was attached to each bag.

“It’s such a sweet gesture that I know will put smiles on a lot of parents’ faces,” said Chris Brooks, R.N., nurse manger of the NICU at Texas Health Dallas who accepted the gifts on behalf of the hospital. “We recently opened sleeping rooms for parents so I know these kits will come in handy for our patients’ families.”

Tara Frost, 11, Hannah Hoffman, and Kami Kavies, both 10, were among the girls who hand-made the overnight kits. The three, along with two church members Melissa McNeely and Lori Berrett, delivered the bags and received a personal tour of the NICU.

“The girls really enjoyed putting together the gifts and then getting a chance to see the babies in the unit,” Berrett said. “They wanted to do something nice to help others, and it also made a big impression on them.”
