PHD Employees, Volunteers Recognized for Commitment and Service

DALLAS – Spending an entire career with one company isn’t as common as it used to be, but for Debra Ofstad-Seals, R.N., who has worked at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas for 30 years, working somewhere else has never crossed her mind.


“There’s just something special about this place,” she said. “You can feel a sense of family among the employees, and I think that’s why so many people enjoy working here and spend their entire careers here. I think patients also feel that bond, which is part of the compassionate, personal care that we strive so hard to provide.

Ofstad-Seals was one of the 113 employees recently honored for at least 20 years of service to Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. The awards were presented at a banquet held by Texas Health Resources, the parent organization of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and 12 other hospitals in North Texas. Eight volunteers, including 40-year veteran Shirley Kubasek, were also honored for longtime service.

“It’s always been fun to work here because exciting things are happening all the time, and the hospital is constantly growing,” said Kubasek, whose daughter has worked at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas for 22 years. “And it’s rewarding to know that we’re making a positive impact on so many patients’ lives.”

Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Texas Health Resources have developed several employee benefit programs aimed at promoting employee morale and retention. The hospital’s human resources department takes a proactive approach, staying ahead of market changes and working to boost benefits whenever possible. A special nursing retention committee works to determine the best ways to maintain a high level of satisfaction among top-level nurses; many of those recommendations are applied to non-clinical employees.

In addition to retirement plans and health insurance, employees are offered: tuition reimbursement for ongoing education; discounted DART rail passes; and discounted membership to the hospital’s Finley Ewing Cardiovascular & Fitness Center, which includes a running track, aerobics and swim classes and other services. Employees who have served at least 10 years also are given gift cards to spend in the hospital cafeteria.

“It’s a sign of total commitment and dedication to our mission, personally and professionally, for these employees and volunteers to have faithfully served this institution for such a long period of time,” said Mark H. Merrill, president of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. “It shows their camaraderie with their coworkers and, most importantly, their passion for improving the lives of the people in the communities we serve.”
