DENTON, Texas — Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton will open The Center for Women, a new women’s center July 26 as part of a $128 million expansion aimed at meeting growing healthcare needs in Denton and its surrounding areas.

Texas Health Denton is the city’s only provider of obstetrical and neonatal intensive care services, and it is the largest provider of obstetrical services in Denton County. With the opening of The Center for Women, Texas Health Denton is growing its footprint and serving families while bringing the latest in healthcare innovation and technology.

“The expansion exemplifies Texas Health’s continuing commitment to provide for the health and wellness needs of patients throughout North Texas,” said Jeff Reecer, president of Texas Health Denton. “Texas Health Denton serves one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation. The four-story, 215,000-square-foot expansion was designed with extensive input from recent mothers and mothers-to-be. The new tower replaces a facility on the campus that was also named The Center for Women.

The new Center for Women was planned to enhance the comfort and convenience of new mothers and their families. The facility includes 12 labor and delivery rooms, 23 postpartum rooms and six antepartum beds. Additionally, there are two surgical suites dedicated for cesarean deliveries, which are also referred to as C-section suites. The hospital’s Obstetrical Emergency Department (OBED), which treats women experiencing gynecological or obstetrical emergencies, is embedded in the Emergency Department.

The postpartum rooms are approximately 400 square feet, the labor and delivery rooms are each about 470 square feet, while the C-section suites are each 600 square feet.

“The enhancements at Texas Health Denton and the new Center for Women usher in a new era of service with more space and modernized facilities. This investment allows us to meet the healthcare needs of our families today and into the future,” said Melissa Winans, DNP, MBA-HCM, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, chief nursing officer for Texas Health Denton. “With this new facility and our dedicated staff, we can provide unmatched care and services to Denton area families, from older generations to the tiniest newborns.”

Additionally, the Texas Health Denton expansion project features additions to several service areas, including a new breast center, Rehabilitation Services and Cardiac Rehabilitation as well as a new education center.

Once completed, enhancements to the Emergency Department will bring 10 additional Emergency Department beds — raising the total at Texas Health Denton to 40. The Emergency Department will have four new trauma rooms. A new helipad allows for landing on the tower rooftop and immediate access to the Emergency Department.

The Emergency Department additions also include an emerging disease isolation suite.  The suite has a self-contained ICU-level room for safe treatment and evaluation of patients as well as space for medical personnel to don and doff personal protective equipment (PPE). It includes two decontamination showers.

Four rooms, known as safer rooms, offer a secure environment for patients with behavioral health needs. 

The project features a new a simulation lab with medical manikins that will allow for continued training of doctors, nurses and other caregivers. The life-like interactive manikins can be programmed to simulate healthcare scenarios such as a stroke or baby delivery. The manikins respond to caregivers, follow commands, talk and can even be programed to cry in pain.

Other enhancements in the Texas Health Denton expansion include:

• Space for Texas Health’s Internal Medicine residency program, including library.
• The new center includes shell space that can meet future demand for future growth.

Texas Health Denton is growing as the community grows. Denton’s 2020 population was 139,869 — up an estimated 23% since 2010, according to the U.S. Census. It’s the county seat of one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation. About 2,000 babies are delivered annually at Texas Health Denton.
