Sympathetic neural patterns and transduction in obesity-associated hypertension (STU2020-0749)
Purpose
Research Study seeking individuals looking to learn about body weight and blood pressure
The study aims to understand the interaction between body weight and blood pressure. We will measure muscle sympathetic nervous system activity in people of all body sizes who have high blood pressure.
Qualifications for this research study:
- Must be between ages 18-55 (no restriction on body weight)
- Have high blood pressure (hypertension)
- Not taking medication for diabetes
Volunteers will receive:
- Health information related to blood work
- DEXA scan for body composition
- 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
- Monetary compensation for study participation
Study procedures include:
- Measurement of nervous system activity
- Handgrip exercise
- Breathing a low oxygen gas mixture, like being on the top of a tall mountain
- Blood draw
