Mental Health First Aid

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID is a skills-based training course that teaches participants about mental health and substance-use issues. Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better. This program is designed for adults who wants to learn how to help people who may be experiencing a mental health-related crisis or problem.

WHAT’S INVOLVED

Participants are required to complete some online prework (on their own) in advance of the virtual training course. The course itself lasts approximately 5.5 hours, including all breaks, and presented via ZOOM.

TOPICS COVERED

Through interactive videos, breakout sessions, and activities, you will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. Topics covered include:

  • Depression and mood disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Trauma
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use disorders

You’ll learn the ALGEE action plan and how to apply it in a variety of situations, including when someone is experiencing panic attacks, suicidal thoughts or behaviors, non-suicidal self-injury, acute psychosis, overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use, and reaction to traumatic events.

All Mental Health First Aid training is presented by a certified Mental Health First Aid trainer. Training is offered free of charge by Texas Health Community Hope. Advanced registration is required. To register, select the date of your choosing below and register on Eventbrite. Note, all sessions have limited capacity.
