Spring in North Texas is a perfect time to embrace the outdoors and prioritize your fitness goals. The pleasant weather provides the perfect backdrop to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities that combine exercise with fun.
Whether you're looking to hike, bike, join a workout class, or participate in community sports leagues, North Texas has you covered. Here’s how you can make the most of the season.
Explore Scenic Hiking Trails
North Texas boasts some of the best hiking trails for all fitness levels. For a serene experience, visit Cleburne State Park, which offers over 13 miles of trails winding through wooded landscapes, limestone bluffs, and lakeside views.
If you prefer lakeside scenery and wildlife sightings, Lake Tawakoni State Park is an excellent choice with trails like Blackjack Trail and Spring Point Trail.
Arbor Hills Nature Preserve, situated in Plano, is a 200-acre park that features three miles of paved hiking trails and three miles of unpaved trails, ideal for walking, jogging, or hiking amidst scenic landscapes.
Additionally, Cedar Ridge Preserve, located in Dallas, boasts 600 acres of natural habitat and offers nine miles of hiking trails through diverse ecosystems. The varying trail difficulties cater to both beginners and seasoned hikers.
Research suggests exercising in a park or other natural setting is more beneficial than exercising indoors. It not only boosts physical health but also improves mental well-being.
Bike-Friendly Parks and Trails
Cycling enthusiasts can head to Katy Trail in Dallas, a 3.5-mile urban trail that features separate paths for bikers and runners. For longer rides, explore White Rock Lake Park. This park features a 9.33-mile loop around the lake, perfect for cyclists seeking a scenic route. The trail accommodates both casual riders and those looking for a more intense workout.
For even longer rides, the Trinity Trails network in Fort Worth offers up to 20 miles of crushed limestone trails along the Trinity River. These bike-friendly spots provide an opportunity to stay active while enjoying scenic views.
Outdoor Workout Classes
Group fitness classes are a fantastic way to stay motivated. Texas Woman's University offers spring group exercise classes such as yoga, HIIT boxing, and Pilates, and you can purchase a day pass for $10, a week pass for $25, or a monthly membership for $40 if you’re not a student, alumni, faculty or staff. You can even find virtual classes on their YouTube channel for a no-cost way to work out at your own pace.
Klyde Warren Park, in Downtown Dallas, also hosts multiple outdoor workout opportunities for visitors of all ages:
- Tai Chi: Klyde Warren Park hosts free Tai Chi classes, led by Dr. Michael Braitsch, a doctor of Physical Therapy and a black sash instructor. These classes focus on Yang Style Tai Chi and Qi Gong, providing a meditative and healthful experience. Classes are typically held on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 8:30 AM at the Ginsburg Family East Lawn.

This high-energy workout is suitable for adults and kids over 13, accompanied by a parent.
On Sunday mornings, The GEM sponsors a Sweat & Sculpt class at 8:45 AM, where you can sweat, sculpt and tone your entire body with low-impact, high-repetition movement inspired by Pilates, dance and strength training.
