FRISCO, Texas – Nearly two years after opening its doors to patients, Texas Health Hospital Frisco is adding more space to meet the growing needs of patients in Collin and Denton counties. The $25 million expansion includes building out the sixth floor, with an additional 30 medical/surgical beds and two operating suites.

“We have seen tremendous growth in the past two years, even outside of COVID-19,” said Brett Lee, president of Texas Health Frisco. “We’re really excited about the flexibility this additional space gives us to build comprehensive programs, so patients don’t have to leave their neighborhood for their care needs.”

Texas Health Frisco, which shares its campus with a UT Southwestern medical office building, opened in December 2019 with 63 beds, seven floors and six OR suites. The sixth and seventh floors were left empty for future growth.

The hospital was built with a universal bed concept. The current fifth floor has been used for trauma, bariatrics, and intensive care patients.

“The expansion allows us to have a dedicated ICU, so we can be more efficient with our staffing and provide a more supportive patient care environment,” Lee said.

Frisco is one of the fastest-growing areas in the Metroplex. Women’s Services is growing about 7.5% a month in terms of number of births, and OR volumes are growing at about 8% a month, Lee said.

Inpatient beds for trauma and surgical patients are also in high demand. The number of inpatients is growing about 10% a month, Lee added. The hospital has seen an increase in EMS bringing patients to the ER, with 25% of those being trauma patients.

“We look forward to decreasing the time patients wait in our ER before moving them to the OR, ICU or a room on the new floor,” said Sara Landsee, R.N., trauma program coordinator at Texas Health Frisco.

Construction of the sixth floor began Nov. 1, with an expected completion date in the summer of 2022.

Out of the 30 additional beds, two will be dedicated to bariatrics.

“Each room will be wheelchair accessible and equipped with a ceiling lift that can hold at least 750 pounds,” said Ana Shaffer, B.S.N., CBN, bariatrics program coordinator at Texas Health Frisco. “It will help promote safety for caregivers and patients, a faster recovery, and overall a better patient experience.”

The bariatrics care team has completed nearly 90 bariatric surgeries since June 2020. Shaffer said they plan to expand the program and offer more patient education and post-op classes.

The hospital includes a 24/7 emergency room, surgical services, women's services, acute care (including intensive care), medical-surgical and progressive care, as well as a neonatal intensive care unit. The 120,000-square-foot UT Southwestern Medical Center medical office building houses primary care practices and a multispecialty clinic.

“We’re excited to move beyond the pandemic and continue to care for our community for many years to come,” Lee said.
