BEDFORD, Texas — Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Hurst-Euless-Bedford has earned designation as a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), a level higher than previously held by the hospital.

“This milestone is thanks to the collaborative teamwork across all departments. Our 16-bed NICU cares for nearly 230 babies a year and this designation from the state recognizes our efforts to provide our smallest patients with high-quality care that leads to positive outcomes and a successful transition home,” said Christina Fankboner, M.S.N., RNC-NIC, NICU and breastfeeding support nursing manager at Texas Health HEB.

A Level III NICU is equipped to provide comprehensive care for infants born at all gestational ages and birth weights, including those with mild to complex critical conditions. The state implemented the Levels of Care for maternal care programs and NICUs in 2018 to verify that hospitals have the resources and expertise to provide care that leads to healthy outcomes for mothers and babies.

“We’re proud of our NICU team for this achievement, which was made possible thanks to their hard work and determination. Our care team is dedicated to supporting families during challenging times and providing every infant with the best possible care,” said Susan Haddox, D.N.P., RNC-MNN, NEA-BC, nursing director for women’s, infants’, and oncology at Texas Health HEB.

This designation not only enhances the hospital's capabilities but also reinforces its dedication to the health and well-being of the community it serves.

“With this significant achievement, Texas Health HEB is prepared to further enhance its services and support for families in the community, ensuring they have access to high-quality neonatal care,” said Brandon Goertz, Ph.D., FACHE, president at Texas Health HEB.
