Richard Ward, M.D., Program Director

Recently, I was asked by a colleague what I felt was the best aspect of our program. Without hesitation, I answered that it was our faculty.

I went on to explain that we have dedicated physicians who serve as faculty because they are passionate about providing the kind of experience that residents need to learn and grow. Residents in our program know the faculty members and program director by name. When you come here for your residency, you are not a number. We know you and value you. You are not going to be lost in the shuffle.

We believe that hands-on experience and collaborative discussion is how residents become high-quality, well-rounded physicians. This commitment is baked into our program design: Smaller class sizes allow more individualized attention. Residents have mentors who walk them through the process. Opportunities for research are open, available and encouraged.

We value an inclusive and diverse environment for our residents, who come together as a team with faculty and other residents to care for patients. To care for themselves, residents also have the benefit of a robust wellness program.

Our community-based program is unique in that our residents receive experience in both rural and urban settings through rounds at two different community hospitals within Texas Health. This experience helps residents become well-rounded physicians inside a system that was awarded the number-one ranking in “Best Workplaces in Health Care” in 2022 and listed as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work for” in 2023, both by Fortune magazine.

Our program’s goals are to help train the next generation of high-quality physicians with the same community-minded mentality that defines our system’s commitment to those we serve. Texas Health welcomes you here. We look forward to helping you grow.

Sincerely,

Richard Ward, M.D.
Program Director
